Business and Industry
Central New York enjoys a diverse economy. The service sector is the leading employer in the region, which boasts a number of manufacturing industries as well. Among the Fortune 500 industrial firms that have facilities in the region are New Venture Gear, Bristol Myers-Squibb, Lockheed Martin, Carrier Corporation and Cooper Industries.
Government, retail trade, transportation, communications and public utilities are major employers in the region. Dairy farming and food processing are also significant contributors to the area's economy.

Transportation
Highways: Major east-west access is provided by the New York State Thruway (I-90), which is bisected by Interstate 81, a major north-south artery that runs from the Canadian border south to Pennsylvania.

Air Service: Hancock International Airport in Syracuse is served by eight major airlines and two commuter airlines. The Oswego County Airport and many other general aviation facilities operate in the region. Syracuse boasts a recently completed Intermodal Transportation Center which combines rail, bus and taxi services, and is conveniently located near the airport.

Rail Service: Rail service is provided by Amtrak.

Bus Service: Greyhound and Trailways provide regular bus service. Regionally, service is provided by Centro, S&O and small local carriers.

Quality of Life
Central New York's abundance of natural resources supports a year-round tourist and recreation industry. Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes and Oneida Lake provide opportunities for a variety of water sports. Winter weather attracts alpine and nordic skiers to the region. Art galleries, museums, winery tours, the Burnet Park Zoo and the annual State Fair are just a few of the area's many attractions. The City of Syracuse has been highly rated by national publications for outstanding quality of life, suitability for families and as a highly desirable place to live.
